Sales of replacement tires for light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles remain an important segment of the aftermarket. In 2009, sales of replacement tires totaled $25.8 billion, a decline of 11.3 percent from 2008 ($29.1 billion). Sales of passenger and light truck tires totaled $21.6 billion, while medium and heavy truck tire sales totaled $4.2 billion. Replacement tire shipments from manufacturers declined 8.3 percent in 2009 to 220.5 million units, after a 6.6 percent decline in the previous year. Passenger tires (182.0 million units) accounted for 82.5 percent of total shipments in 2009, followed by light truck tires (26.0 million units) at 11.8 percent and medium and heavy truck tires (12.5 million units) at 5.7 percent.
