key eConoMIC InDICaTors U.S. gross domestic product totaled nearly $13.0 trillion in 2009, reflecting a 0.7 percent compounded annual growth rate since 2005. Despite this mild growth, the overall economy saw unfavorable changes in key economic indicators as it tried to recover from the recession. Some of the most notable changes in the four year compounded annual growth rates occurred in the civilian unemployment rate (16.2 percent), housing starts (-28.0 percent) and the consumer confidence index (-15.2 percent). Changes in the U.S. economy were also seen in the weakening of the U.S. dollar relative to other foreign currencies. For example, exchange rates expressed in units per U. S. dollars indicated the broad index declined from 110.71 in 2005 to 105.87 in 2009 reflecting a -1.1 percent change in the compounded annual growth rate. As the dollar continued to weaken relative to foreign currencies, total U.
