The respondents are owners and managers of body shops selected from the circulation list of BodyShop Business magazine. A random selection process was used to identify the target locations. The information contained in this report provides valuable trend data as well as answers to more topical issues confronting the industry. It is perhaps the most comprehensive study of the opinions and operating variables of the day-to-day decision-makers that make up this industry. It should be noted that the vast majority of the respondents are either owners/partners or shop managers of their respective operations. The 2009 Body Shop Industry Profile is separated into six sections: Section Section Section Section Section Section 1 2 3 4 5 6 .........Respondent Profile .........General Business Operations .........Employee Profile .........Purchasing & Equipment Profile .........Sales Analysis & Operations . . . . . . . . Direct Repair Programs and Insurer Issues Many of the questions posed in this survey have been broken out by sales volume. The reader can thus analyze the information typifying a random selection of shops of various sizes across the country. METHOD The objective of the 2009 Body Shop Industry Profile is to obtain the most comprehensive overview of the collision repair industry attainable by contacting a significant number of shop owners and managers directly. With the information collected (supported by trend data over time), the editors of BodyShop Business gain unique insight into the collision repair industry. The articles and product information that appear in the pages of BodyShop Business are thus based on the most up-to-date information available and provide the most useful data to body shops, manufacturers, distributors and other parties interested in the growth and development associated with the collision repair industry. The 2009 Body Shop Industry Profile was executed via a nationwide mail survey to 6,000 collision repair shops. The survey consisted of 6 questionnaires. Each questionnaire was mailed to a sample of 1,000 readers of BodyShop Business. Each questionnaire contained unique questions and there were a number of questions that were common to all questionnaires. The method of sample selection, data collection, and tabulation were the same across all versions. Surveys were mailed on February 20, 2009. Completed questionnaires were accepted through April 6, 2009. A total of 458 questionnaires were returned yielding a response rate of 7.7% (when undeliverable questionnaires are factored). Sample selection entailed a systematic sampling procedure in which every ‘nth’ name was selected from the BodyShop Business subscription list. The sample provided geographic representation and the respondent was offered an incentive of a free subscription renewal. The surveys were mailed first class and a pre-addressed, prepaid return envelope was provided.
