MoTor vehICle sales Due to a number of factors including an unsteady economy, the total number of U.S. vehicle sales declined in 2009 by 21.4 percent to 10.7 million vehicles, the lowest levels seen in the last ten years. Total new light vehicle sales (10.4 million vehicles) dropped 21.2 percent from 2008 while passenger car sales (5.7 million vehicles) declined 19.2 percent and light truck sales (4.7 million vehicles) declined 23.6 percent. Combined sales of medium and heavy duty trucks fell in 2009 to 227,726 units (down 29.4 percent from 2008). Sales in the medium duty truck segment fell by 33.3 percent for the year while heavy duty truck sales decreased by 26.4 percent. Light vehicle leases fell to 1.7 million vehicles in 2009, representing 4.8 percent of the total light vehicle market. Used vehicle sales continue to encompass the majority of the light vehicle market, accounting for more than twothirds of all light vehicle sales (70.9 percent). u.s.
