ToP 10 lIghT vehICle sales In 2009, the overall number of light vehicle sales declined by 21.2 percent to 10.4 million vehicles. The market share of passenger car sales grew to 54.6 percent while the market share of light trucks fell to 45.4 percent. In 2009, the top 10 passenger cars comprised 38.9 percent of the total passenger car market (up slightly from 38.6 percent in 2008), while the top 10 light trucks comprised 38.7 percent of the total light truck market (up from 35.1 percent in 2008). While the top five passenger cars were foreign nameplates (Toyota, Honda and Nissan), four of the top five light trucks were well-known domestic nameplates (Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge).
