TeChnICIan eMPloyMenT anD Wages Service repair technicians continue to play a major role in the aftermarket. In 2009, employment of automotive technicians totaled approximately 768,000 people, with the largest concentrations at general repair shops, vehicle dealerships and gasoline service stations. Between 1980 and 2007, the demand for service repair technicians and the supply (number) of technicians both gradually increased. During this period, demand for technicians grew an average of 0.7 percent per year, while the supply of technicians grew an average of 2.1 percent per year. However, as the chart below demonstrates, both the demand and the supply for technicians dropped in 2008 and 2009 reflecting the U. S. economic downturn accompanied by a decline in annual miles traveled, lower light vehicle sales and a drop in total vehicle registrations.
