MoTor vehICle PoPulaTIon The U.S. motor vehicle population experienced negative growth rates for the first time in ten years declining 0.3 percent in 2009, bringing the total number of registered vehicles to 250.1 million. Registrations of light vehicles (241.5 million) fell by 0.2 percent in 2009, while medium and heavy-duty truck registrations (8.6 million) were down 1.2 percent from the previous year. The number of licensed drivers in the U.S. is expected to increase to 210.8 million people in 2009, representing a 1.2 percent increase over 2008. The relationship between light vehicle registrations and licensed drivers resulted in a ratio of 1.15 for 2009, down slightly from 1.16 in 2008. In 2009, the vehicle scrappage rate for all light motor vehicles rose for the fourth consecutive year from 4.3 percent in 2005 to 6.1 percent in 2009. The average age of all light vehicles in use has been on the rise for the past ten years. In 2009, the average age reached an all-time high of 10.2 years.
