hybrID vehICles Hybrid vehicles employ technology that uses either an electric motor or the combination of an electric motor and a gasoline engine in place of a traditional gasoline-powered internal combustion engine. Hybrid vehicles provide better fuel economy, reduced emissions and higher mileage than standard powered vehicles. They also require less regular maintenance and run cleaner than other standard powered vehicles. U.S. registrations of hybrid vehicles totaled nearly 1.4 million as of July 1, 2009. The following six states contain approximately three-fifths (61.2 percent) of the total registrations: California (26.1 percent), Florida (5.0 percent), New York (4.9 percent), Texas (4.9 percent), Virginia (3.9 percent) and Illinois (3.8 percent). In the five years from 2004 to 2009, new registrations totaled 1,344,790. The five most popular models representing 85.4 percent of new vehicle registrations were: Toyota Prius (50.5 percent), Honda Civic (11.5 percent), Toyota Camry (10.3 percent), Toyota Highlander (7.1 percent), and Lexus RX (6.0 percent). hybrid registrations by state Total as of 7/1/09 = 1,383,630 All Other States 38 .8% California 26 .1% Florida 5 .0% New Jersey 2 .8% Massachusetts 3 .1% Pennsylvania 3 .2% Washington 3 .5% Illinois 3 .8% Virginia 3 .9% New York 4 .9% Texas 4 .9% Source: R.
