gasolIne afforDabIlITy anD vehICle MIles TraveleD In 2009, the total number of miles traveled on U.S. roads grew slightly by 0.2 percent from the previous year to just over 2.9 trillion miles. This growth marks a slight rebound after miles driven in 2008 experienced the largest drop in miles traveled in the last three decades (-3.4 percent). The decline in miles traveled in 2008 was due to a number of factors, including consumer reaction to high gasoline prices, the unstable economy and the growth in unemployment.
