MexICan afTerMarkeT The Mexican automotive industry has traditionally experienced positive growth over the past decade thus providing a platform for business with U.S. companies. However, in 2009 Mexican sales of light vehicles fell drastically by 26.4 percent from a total of 1.0 million in 2008 to 754.9 thousand in 2009. Light vehicles in the top ten category by make represented 95.5 percent of total sales. The best selling vehicle make was Nissan, which comprised more than one-fifth or 20.7 percent of total sales. General Motors, with 18.3 percent of total sales, ran a close second while Volkswagen was third with 15.6 percent. In 2009, Mexico produced 1.5 million vehicles, down 28.3 percent from 2008 in which 2.1 million vehicles were produced. This figure represents the fewest number of vehicles produced since 2005. Vehicle production was led by Nissan (355,414 vehicles), General Motors (350,534 vehicles) and Volkswagen (319,743 vehicles).
