NEBULOUS WAVES Emil Andronic The California Nebula (NGC 1499) is a large emission nebula spanning some 21/2° in Perseus. Strong ultraviolet radiation from Menkib, or Xi (ξ) Persei, the 4th-magnitude star seen at top left, causes the nebulosity to fluoresce.
