Dick Pope, BSC reteams with
Mike Leigh on Peterloo, once again
sans script and conjuring scenes
from scratch

The 19th-century drama Peterloo chronicles an infamous
incident in British history wherein a huge peaceful gathering of reformers in Manchester was violently dispersed by
local and regional authorities, resulting in numerous fatalities and at least 600 wounded. The event became known
as "The Peterloo Massacre," a name referring to both St.
Peter's Field - Manchester's town square - and
Napoleon's recent defeat at Waterloo.

Peterloo is the 11th feature writer-director Mike
Leigh has made with Dick Pope, BSC, his creative partner
since 1990's Life Is Sweet, and although it's their most logistically ambitious project yet, Pope notes that the director's
method did not change. "I think everybody thought -
though I'm not sure I did - that Mike might change his
working practices for this project and devise it in a different way, because he had a cast of hundreds to deal with
and so many facets to get across, but he didn't," the cinematographer says.
"We knew, of course, that we had the massacre itself
ahead of us, so it wasn't like we were going blind into a
completely unknown story, which happens a lot working
with Mike," Pope continues. "But he devised everything
leading up to the massacre, all the events that gave it
context, the way he always does - by working with the
actors for several months [ahead of production] to develop
the characters, and then during the shoot conjuring up
each scene from scratch as we went along. And when it
