T
he use of drones in cinema is growing with lightning
speed, and as innovation continues to push what's possible,
filmmakers and drone pilots are finding creative
ways to meld traditional work methods with new technology.
Drone operation has been steadily working its
way into the standard vocabulary of camera movement
- with productions deploying collaborative teams
comprised of a pilot, camera operator, visual observer and even a focus
puller. " The best images are taken with a team of people who are all
gathered together to do their duty, " says Flying Monster pilot and operator
Jon Graham.
In the following pages, AC explores the current state of drone technology,
with examples from recent productions. Included in this coverage
is a look at " first person view " drones, which are gaining popularity
among filmmakers. For these " FPVs, " the pilot operates the craft using
goggles and a controller, sometimes at very high speed. The technique
is akin to flying an airplane, but from a virtual cockpit. " The level of skill
required to do this highly technical flying is very important, " says Lightcraft
chief operating officer/drone pilot Chad Daring. " You have to bring
in the right people with the right skill sets to put the drones in a comfortable
place safely and repetitively. "
