Master Class For Masters
Examines HDR
The ASC Motion Imaging Technology
Council organized a
Master Class for Masters detailing
high-dynamic-range production
and exhibition on Sept. 26 and 27.
Multiple facets of HDR production
and the new Digital Cinema Initiatives
theatrical HDR specifications
were examined.
The first day, held at AmaASC
Welcomes Burberry
Born in England and raised in
Sydney, Australia, Vance Burberry,
ASC, ACS first felt a passion for
light while working as a stagehand
for a local theater company. He
marveled at the way light could
transform the stage into a magical
world, allowing the audience to
become immersed in the story. He
soon focused on learning the craft
of lighting design.
When making a living in theater
proved difficult, Burberry jumped
at the chance to light for local rock
bands. In just three years, he was
lighting concert tours for major
Australian artists, including Cold
Chisel and INXS. In 1984, during a
world tour with INXS that ended
in the U.S., he was asked to stay
stateside and go on the road with
The Go-Go's on what would become
their final tour.
After becoming a U.S. resident

and settling in Hollywood, Burberry
found himself working on film sets
as an electrician. He became a gaffer
during the early days of music
videos and MTV, so it was a natural
transition for him to move behind
the camera and begin shooting.
After Burberry filmed Guns N'
Roses' video for " Sweet Child O'
Mine " (the first of six he would
shoot for the band), his career took
off, and his collaborators came
to include Alice Cooper, Tesla,
Extreme, Britney Spears, Ozzy
Osbourne, Busta Rhymes and The
Weeknd. With his concert-lighting
background, he also shot many
performance films during that period,
including Pearl Jam, Let's Play
Two; Eagles, Live From the Forum
MMXVIII; Beyonce and Jay-Z Live
at the Rose Bowl; Alicia Keys Live
in L.A. and U2 Live at the Apollo.
Burberry continues to do such
work, and he recently collaborated
with Adele on several projects.
During the 1990s, when music
videos frequently had budgets
of more than $1 million, Burberry
worked nonstop, enjoying
the creative freedom the genre
provided. He also began shooting
commercials, and a spot he shot for
Coca-Cola is on permanent display
at the Museum of Modern Art in
New York.
Burberry has since shot hundreds
of music videos and commercials
for directors that include
Nigel Dick, David Fincher, Paul
Hunter, Francis Lawrence, Hype
Williams and Stan Winston. In 2022,
he was honored with the EnergaCamerimage
Award for Outstanding
Achievements in Music Videos.
" For me, cinematography is not
only a craft but a spiritual journey, "
Burberry noted. " For me to tell a
story visually requires an emotional
connection; I listen to my heart. The
zon's Culver Theater in Culver
City, focused on the specs and
ramifications of the DCI 300-nit
theatrical-exhibition standard,
employing a state-of-the-art LED
emissive Samsung Onyx theatrical
screen. Presentations included a
breakdown of HDR in cinema and
the systems attempting to meet
this specification, with comments
from imaging expert Pete Ludé.
ASC members who shared
their experiences in " SDR vs.
HDR " creation included Armando
Salas (detailing his work on the
series Ozark), Bill Bennett (on
his short demo Flamenco), and
associate member Jay Holben
(on making the ASC MITC StEM2
short The Mission).
The second day, held at the
Clubhouse, focused on HDR monitoring
on set. Salas served as the
instructor and used multiple camera
setups to walk other members
