the top lighting required to light up
the animation cels would tend to
soften the projected image because of
the reflected rays of light bouncing
off the ground glass or paper into the
lens. Therefore, the Aerial Image is
photographed through clear glass up¬
on which the animation cel is placed.
The Aerial Image projected through
clear glass is not affected by the
overhead lights of the animation cam¬
era, and consequently the ultimate im¬
age picked up by the animation cam¬
era will be sharp and clear.
The projected image must not be
directed upward directly from below
the animation stand as the light be¬
hind the projected image would create
a "Hot Spot" that would be picked
up by the animation camera. However,
if the projection device is set to one
side of the animation camera stand
and directed at a mirror, canted at
45 degrees, the "Hot Spot" will be
avoided. Also, the projection passes
through two condensing lenses which
also correct the natural keystoning
that would occur from canting the pro¬
jected image.
This method of simultaneous pho¬
tography can save considerable valu¬
able time than would be the case if
the more cumbersome method of the
Optical Printer were used. As pointed
out above, the combination of live
action and animation on one piece of
film would, in the case of the Optical
Printer, require the preparation of
Traveling Mattes, both positive and
negative-the positive for masking out
the animation while the live action
film is being run through the printer,
ond the negative to mask out the live
action while the animation is being
run through. In each case, the film
would have to be processed before
the Mattes could be used. In simultan¬
eous photography, as in the case of
Aerial
Image
Photography,
there
would be no waiting because there
is no need to prepare Traveling Mattes,
and moreover, the registration is likely
to be more accurate.

This dissertation would be incom¬
plete without some mention of the "Bi¬
pack", sometimes called the poor
man's optical printer. This device is
nothing more than a double film mag¬
azine (Fig. 8) to allow the threading
of two films into the shuttle of the
animation camera so that they pass
before the aperture simultaneously.
