THROUGH THE EDITOR'S VIEMDER
In January, the American Society of Cinematographers will be
50 years old-and will have completed a half-century of "Loyalty,
Progress and Artistry" as per its motto.
Usually, when an organization has reached its Golden Anni¬
versary, it puts out some sort of publication full of self-congratu¬
latory praise to commemorate the great event.
Such a publication would be contrary to both the purpose and
the spirit of ASC, which was founded, and has always functioned,
as an organization devoted to technical progress within the film
industry in general.
So, instead of the usual "aren't we wonderful!" type of pub¬
lication, ASC will celebrate its 50th Birthday with a salute to
the entire cinema industry. The January, 1969 issue of AMERICAN
CINEMATOGRAPHY will, in effect, be an anthology of features
tracing the historical evolution of the various technological
processes involved in the art and science of motion picture
production. This is fitting, since the history of ASC is inseparable
from that of the industry itself.
This special 50th Anniversary Issue of AMERICAN CINEMATOG¬
RAPHER will be "over-size" in that it will contain several times
the amount of editorial content included in a regular issue. It
will also have a heavier cover. The single copy price for this
special issue only will be $1.00-or $1.25, if sent by mail. In
addition, in order to satisfy the requirements of libraries, uni¬
versities and serious collectors, a limited number of Deluxe
hard-bound copies will be made available at $5.00 per copy.
It is anticipated that this special 50th Anniversary issue of
AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER may well become a collector's
item and standard reference work, since no such comprehensive
volume devoted to the technological history of the motion picture

industry now exists. For this reason a certain number of extra
copies will be produced. But how many?
In order to arrive anywhere near an accurate press run, it
will be necessary to limit the sale of extra copies to those
reserved on a pre-publication basis only, with an absolute dead¬
line of December 1, 1968 for ordering. A coupon for such orders
is included in the announcement at the bottom of this page.
Research for the special 50th Anniversary issue has been going
on for months in order to insure that the result will be as
complete and historically accurate as possible. In addition, sev¬
eral top experts on historic aspects of motion picture technology
are hard at work preparing special features.
We recognize, however, that there may exist among the readers
of AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER, many who are also experts in
these areas, and we invite them to contribute text and illustra¬
tive material. All artwork and photographs will be handled most
carefully and will be returned immediately following engraving.
We wish, however, to point out that because individual features
will necessarily be composed of data gleaned from many and
various sources, it will be impossible to publish individual bylines
or credit lines. Those contributing like our own hard-working
experts, will be doing so simply as a "labor of love."
The special January, 1969, 50th Anniversary Issue of AMERICAN
CINEMATOGRAPHER is designed to be both a technical and
nostalgic history of one of the most excitingly romantic industries
in the world-and America's only original art form. We ask your
cooperation toward this end, not only by contributing text data
and illustrations, but by placing your pre-publication orders for
extra single issues before December 1-so that you may be
assured of delivery.
