the reprieve, I didn't know how to
react. I was completely confused. I
had no friends and nothing to really
go on living for-until I was given
the opportunity to work with the film
group. For the first time I'm able to
express myself in some constructive
way. That's why it means so much to
me. I'm in here to stay-and without
this work with film, life would be just
an endless chain of empty days . . ."
There are similar expressions from
others in the group, spoken with great
sincerity and unaccustomed emotion.
The mood lightens a bit when John
Showalter, Editor of the San Quentin
News, presents me with a complimen¬
tary subscription to his award-winning
publication. I chuckle with inward glee
as I visualize the expression on the
postman's face when he starts deliv¬
ering this unusual journal to my quite
proper mailbox.
I have brought with me several back
issues of AMERICAN CINEMATOGRA¬
PHER and my own personal copy of
the ASC Manual to replace such items
which were destroyed in a recent fire.
I am quite touched when they ask me
to autograph the Manual, and I write
on the flyleaf: "To my cinematic 'Kin¬
dred Spirits' in the San Quentin In¬
mate Film Workshop-Happy Shoot¬
ing . . .''
A bit sentimental? Perhaps-but I
regard all film-makers as kindred spir¬
its, no matter how or where they may
operate. The speech of these men
may be laced with prison jargon, but
underneath it all we speak the same
universal language-the language of
film.
Suddenly, it is time to leave. Sev¬
eral pleasant hours have sped by and
now the inexorable routine of this in¬
stitution moves silently toward that mo¬
ment of "lights out."
We shake hands. We say reluctant
goodbyes. They tell me how much our
visit has meant to them-but they
don't know that it has meant even
more to me, for seldom have I felt
directed toward me such waves of
warmth and friendliness as I have
here within these cold prison walls.
With Dick Queirolo I walk out into
the velvet-fogged night, still thinking
about these men to whom the making
of motion pictures is almost as vital as
eating or breathing. They are a rare
and special group.
I won't forget them. ■
