The 409 Program
In 1976, a brilliant computer

named Dave Bargen, in co¬
operation with the Vidtronics Co. Inc.,
of Hollywood, devised a computer pro¬
gram known as the 409 program. This
program, makes possible "dirty'' edit
decision list cleanup in minutes of what
used to require hours.
The "dirty" edit decision list
(a list with overlaps and undeleted edits
shown in Figure 8-A) that is generated
on any ASCII compatible edit system is
merely put into the computer memory
via paper punch tape or floppy disk.
After the "dirty" lists have
been input, the editor may press C
(clean) to only eliminate edit out-time
overlap, J (join) to join consecutive au¬
dio or video edits that are in sync and
have the same reel number, or A (All) to
accomplish all phases of the cleaning
process automatically.
The output edit decision list
(Figure 8-B) is then cleaned in such a
way as to allow online auto assembly in
either the sequential (A mode) or the
checkerboard fashion (B mode).
