spite their enthusiasm, however,
Warner Brothers was skeptical.
They couldn't imagine a thirtyyear-old movie having fresh appeal
for contemporary audiences.
Though they'd been generous with
funds for the reconstruction, they
made no plans for a re-release of
this classic. There would
be, in¬
stead, special showings in six ma¬
jor cities, centering around the
theme of film preservation.

after we'd finished working on A
Star Is Born, the original edited

footage that an eccentric film col¬
lector had stolen from a variety of
studios. When we screened
Cukor's version, we were pleased
to find that his cut was remarkably
similar to ours. This new find was
immediately cut into the CRI to
replace our version. The number,
and all the new prints of the pic¬
ture,
will henceforth contain this
segment.

keenly, and strove to do them jus¬
tice.
