In 1904, as Kerschner tells it,
his father bought him a new pair of
shoes for a dollar and a half and with
the shoes he received a two-inch square
box Kodak with an accompanying small
box of glass plates. The instructions

yard to photograph a pet rooster. Sud¬
denly he heard an explosion and saw a
column of white smoke. He pho¬
tographed this instead and took his
