Abruptly the lights go out, a chandelier crashes to
the floor, and the patrons panic. When the lights come
back on, the body of Peg Leg is found, knifed and robbed,
on the floor. Horngold, beaten to his prey, sees a familiar
figure flee by a side door. He follows the man and knocks
at his house at the end of the village.
Harry Morgan (Gibson Gowland), a
notorious highbinder and descendant of the infamous
pirate, Sir Henry Morgan, answers the knock. Morgan
was a patron of the dance hall at the time of the murder.
Horngold covets Morgan's innocent but fery-tempered
step-daughter, Anita (Lupe Velez), and he is blackmailing
Morgan for some past indiscretion. Horngold tells Mor¬
gan that he must now pay him more than had been agreed
upon and is in turn told that he will have to pay more for
Anita than he had expected. Morgan is adamant until
Horngold tells him of having witnessed the altercation at
the dance hall, and of having seen Morgan flee, his
pockets stuffed with money. Caught dead to rights, Mor¬
gan summons Anita, tells her he has found her a husband,
and addresses Horngold as "my son-in-law." Anita re¬
fuses angrily, knowing that Horngold is awaiting the ar¬
rival of Wade in order to raise the money necessary to
buy her honor.

Horngold (Jean Hersholt), an unscrupulous trader.
Horngold, expecting to profit from the arrival of an
American trader named Bob Wade (John Holland), pays
Peg Leg £100 for a collection of pearls. Peg Leg happily
departs for a dance hall frequented by a tough crowd.
Alone with his acquisition, Horngold
