Kloepfel,

Haythorne talked about the
early newsreel business where he was

tant on all phases of projection whose
career spans 60 years in motion pic¬
tures, presented the lecture and demon¬
stration. Fie began as a theater
projectionist, became a studio sound
engineer and projection process super¬

visor, and has contributed to innumer¬
able theater

designs and created some
highly sophisticated projection systems.
Kloepfel was a key technician in the
design of the Showscan 70mm equip¬
ment

and theaters.
The presentation

covered the
early days of film-disc projection and its
problems, the early sound on film tech¬
niques, the 3-D and wide screen eras
and the present automated projection
systems. "It grew by trial and error,"
Kloepfel said; "much trial and many
errors."

Haythorne,

a

former

member of A.S.C., now retired, wrote to
American Cinematographer of his mem¬
ories in the organization. He spoke of

beginning in 1919. "Cov¬

ering the

news in the days when we
didn't have exposure meters or fast

film, with just one chance to get the

picture, we often took chances with our
lives. Handcranking was the only way
then to get the picture."
He wrote about working on a
picture, The Human Adventure (1934),
using 35mm black and white film doing
rack and tank processing in Cairo,
Egypt, transporting the film from country
to country on location. Haythorne en¬
closed a picture, reproduced here, of the
news

crew

which covered the 1928

Republican convention in Kansas City.
"No lights, no air conditioning, no
meters, just plain stuff and the com¬
mand to get the picture!"
Haythorne now lives in War¬
ren, Arizona and makes occasional trips
to Los Angeles to renew old friendships.
