Liza Minnelli and Robert DeNiro
star in this musical/drama about show busi¬
ness in the 40 s and 50 s. For those who find
the romantic elements abrasive, there is

plenty of extra texture to delight the senses.
The songs by Kander and Ebb are nicely
integrated with songs of the time by musi¬
cal supervisor, Ralph Burns and Boris Leven's production design is as rich as the
movies that inspired it.

When New York, New York was

originally released on video, scenes cut from
the theatrical version gloriously reappeared.
Now with video revision becoming a trend
in the marketplace, we can see more of
what Laszlo Kovacs, ASC had in mind when

composing his shots. It doesn't matter what
call it, letterbox or videoscope, it ac¬
cents the role of the cinematographer in a
medium which so often disregards and

Dana Andrews is pitted against
evil demon conjured up by Niall MacGinnis in order to protect his secret society. Ted
Scaife's deep focus black and white photog¬
an

raphy is in perfect harmony with Tourneur's
suspenseful direction. This journey from
skepticism to the supernatural has many
memorable atmospheric moments, a storm
invoked by MacGinnis is one of the best. The
video and laserdisc both run 83 minutes. The
British version called Night of the Demon
runs 12 minutes longer, but is not yet
available in the U.S.
