by means of a cable. When the
carrier was detached from the cab towing
it, the semi stopped (in view of the camera,
but credibly, as if in apprehension of colli¬
sion with the trailer), completely yanking the
carrier from the cab.

"By itself, the carrier would not
have come off the (cab)," Frazier says. "It
could ride there forever, even though it's
been released, just due to the weight of the
carrier. So we needed the 'holdback' cable
to the truck behind, and on cue, the driver
locked his brakes."
When the carrier disengaged
with the cab towing it, steel castor wheels
attached to the front underside of the carrier
directed it toward the center embankment.
As it yawed toward the divider, a stuntman

"The

cannons are

used to turn

over," says Van Horn. "You put a
wooden dowel, in this case four foot lengths

of reinforced telephone pole, up inside a big
steel sleeve and you put a charge on top of
it. If that carrier were lying on its side and
one of those cannons go off, it would shoot
that telephone pole about 600 feet. It's a

major projectile.
"But for every action there's a
reaction. You blow that dowel out of the
cannon toward the ground and that force

tips the car over. But you've also got to have
the weight transferring just at that moment,
and that's why we had the castor wheels,
to let it start to get a little weight shift. As
it turns to the left in a banana arc (toward
the freeway divider) it's throwing its weight
to the outside, and that's the direction those
cannons are trying to throw over the trailer."
