"The Practice," David
Kelley's series about Boston lawyers. Unlike the warm tones of Kelley's
"Picket Fences,"

which Smith also DP'd, this series has more of a
"high-contrast, docudrama feel." Using Fuji's 500 ASA tungsten and
250 ASA daylight, he has the latitude to give the story life and texture.
On the set or in the mountains, he likes the feeling of accomplish¬
ment when he arrives someplace he's never been. The equipment's
different, he says, but the idea's the same. "Instead of hiking boots,
tent and backpack, you have light, color and film. It's all about a
journey."
