When The Terminator materialized on movie

back in 1984, it was a relatively lowbudget film that became a surprise hit - and
then a worldwide phenomenon. The inevitable
sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, upped the
budget and the ante, establishing an eye-popping
benchmark for digital visual effects. Both pictures
were shot by Adam Greenberg, ASC for director
James Cameron, and the duo's imaginative work
spawned legions of fans.
This legacy was entrusted to Don Burgess, ASC
screens

and director Jonathan Mostow, who teamed up on
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

Filmmaking technologies in general - and digi¬
particular - have made giant strides since the release of T2 in 1991,
but Burgess and Mostow still faced the daunting prospect of taking an established
franchise in a new direction. As AC writer Jay Holben discovered, however, neither
was afraid to retool the look of this classic sci-fi series ("Heavy Metal," page 30).
Fantasy is also the driving force behind Pirates of the Caribbean, a rollicking
adventure based on the beloved Disneyland attraction. Those of us who have endured
long lines to exult in the ride's mutinous revels (it still seems ironic to float past animatronic scenes of pillage and plunder in the Magic Kingdom) are prepared to wait for
tickets at the box office. After shooting this peg-legged project, Dariusz Wolski, ASC
told his yarn to Kevin Martin ("Skull and Bones," page 54).
Another favorite in the Summer Stakes is Seabiscuit, a handsome period
drama about one of history's finest racehorses. John Schwartzman, ASC lent excite¬
ment and elegance to the film's cinematography, which wistfully recreates the ambi¬
ence of the Depression era. AC correspondent John Calhoun presents a thorough
overview of this thoroughbred project ("Horse Power," page 42).
A dark-horse indie contender is Garage Days, which brings an eye-candy
aesthetic to the shaggy-dog tale of a struggling Australian rock band. Director Alex
Proyas is renowned for dark visions (The Crow, Dark City), but cinematographer Simon
Duggan, ACS helped him craft a vibrant visual style that could be described as A Hard
Day's Night on uppers and acid. Jon Silberg stayed sensibly sober to get the inside
dope ("Pop Life," page 66).
This month's special focus is music videos and commercials, which continue to
serve as fertile ground for visual experimentation. Stephanie Argy spoke to cine¬
matographer David Ungaro about Honda's remarkable "Cog" ad, which has become a
sensation on the Internet ("Domino Effect," page 78), and interviewed James
Hawkinson about his work on a new Deftones video that pitted the crew against a
particularly uncooperative environment ("Howling Desert," page 74); meanwhile, Jon
Silberg chatted with Karsten "Crash" Gopinath, who contributed his talents to a
sensual No Doubt video that earned this year's Best Cinematography honor at the
annual MVPA Awards ("Siren Song," page 82).
