simple terms, digital optical
made up of a long string of
"pits," impressions formed on the metal¬
lic surface between the polycarbonate
discs. They are arranged in a continuous
spiral track coming out from the center
of the disc to the edge. The laser reads
the fluctuation between the pits and
plateaus as digital information (ones and
zeros). The sizes of these pits and the
amount of spirals of pits that can fit on a
disc determine its capacity. Current CD
technology has a track pitch of 1.6
microns (pm), minimum pit length of
,83pm, a pit width of ,5pm and a capac¬
ity of up to 700MB. DVDs have a track
pitch of ,74pm, minimum pit length of
,4pm, width of .35pm and a capacity of
4.7GB. HD DVDs will have a significantly
smaller track pitch of ,4pm, minimum pit
length of ,204pm and pit width of ,25pm
with a capacity of up to 30GB per disc,
