Tongue Bully Blends Poetry with Ethereal Images

In the Canadian short film Tongue
Bully, dancer and performance artist
Learie E.A. McNicolls performs a
poem on the streets of Havana. Directed
by Annie Bradley and shot by cine¬
matographer Marcus Elliott, the film
consists largely of distorted, almost
ethereal images that Elliott created with

Bradley first had the idea for the
project when she and Elliott attended a
group performance to see a choreogra¬
pher whose work they would be filming
the following week. McNicolls was also
on the program, and upon seeing his
performance, Bradley knew she had to
make a movie with him. "I thought, 'If I
don't put this on film, I will regret it for
the rest of my life.' He was that
compelling just doing a poem." She also
