Sony F23 Prototype F23 on location four months ago At NAB, Sony Electronics and Band Pro Film & Digital will show the new F23 Cinealta camera, last seen under glass, or rather, plexi, at NAB 2006, and as a prototype at Band Pro’s One World on HD Media Event. The F23 captures 4:4:4 RGB, using three 1920x1080 ⅔" progressive CCD imagers and a 14-bit A/D converter. The system will support 1080/23.98P, 24P, 25P, 29.97P, 50P, 59.94P, 50i and 59.94i formats. Rob Willox, Sony’s director of marketing for professional content creation products, said, “Developed for cinematographers, this system will offer the technical and mechanical flexibility they need, as well as a compact and rugged design to withstand the challenging conditions often encountered on location.” The new system builds on the Sony HDC-F950 and HDC1500 camera’s 4:4:4 design, but also incorporates several new features, the direct result of feedback from production professionals and cinematographers. The SRW-1 4:4:4 digital recorder will dock directly to the top or back of the new system. The recorder can also be tethered using a “dual-link” cable connection so the camera is as small and light as possible. Michael Bravin, Band Pro’s Chief Technology Officer commented, “this is Sony’s first camera specifically designed for high-end motion picture production and we look forward to it’s adoption for dramatic television, commercials, sitcoms, and feature production where a DI and film-out is intended.” The camera body will be compatible with many film camera accessories, including bridge plates, matte boxes and follow focus units. These can be attached without modification. For increased durability and reliability, the F23 will use Invar Stainless Steel for its lens mount (B4 type). This will dramatically decrease the number of back focus adjustments (familiar with with some B4 mount cameras) that have to be made. When used with Sony’s SRW-1 VTR, the F23 camera system can shoot and record variable speed images from 1 to 60 Progressive FPS in 4:2:2 and 1 to 30 Progressive FPS in 4:4:4 at the full HD resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. This allows for undercranking , overcranking and ramping in camera. The variable speed material can be played back in camera by the SRW-1 in addition to any of the series of HDCAM SR VTRs, immediately after shooting with no processing needed. The system’s control surface layout, indicators and menu system were designed to give film camera users a familiar and intuitive user interface. More on that in future issues. Users can operate the system with the supplied “Assistant Panel” remote controller. It connects to the camera with a single cable and lets users remotely control basic camera and VTR operations, such as REC/STOP, changing frame rates and shutter angle. The F23 system is expected to be available late this spring, for sale by Sony and from Band Pro Film & Digital, Sony’s CineAlta Premier reseller. Extensive orientation, operator training, on-set support and maintenance will be performed by Band Pro and Sony. Mar 2007 11
