“The Maine State Bird” by Elisabeth Thibodeau actually is a mosquito comprised of steel and copper wire, and was one of the entries honored in the 2006 Art by Engineers competition. Thibodeau is a masters student in Civil & Environmental Engineering and has worked as both an environmental and civil engineer. University of Maine Competition Emphasizes Creative Side of Engineers n addition to technical proficiency, every good engineer’s creative ability also must be nurtured, say officials at the University of Maine’s College of Engineering. For the third consecutive year, the school has presented its Art by Engineers competition, featuring artwork from students, faculty and others from the science and engineering community. Past competition winners have included a cardboard chair, nature photography and precisionmachined aluminum mazes. I The program is designed to give students a chance to exercise their creative side and to demonstrate to the public that a successful engineer should possess a great deal of artistic creativity, along with technological expertise, says program cofounder, Edwin Nagy. “Engineering is a creative profession—every day brings new problems to the designer’s desk, the solutions of which must often be original creations,” Nagy says. “Students in engineering and the sciences need to be rewarded for their creative abilities, not just their skills at crunching numbers through formulae.” The annual competition climaxes with an awards ceremony, with prizes presented for artistic excellence in several categories, including Best Environmentally Inspired Art—spon- sored by ACEC member firm Woodard and Curran Engineering—and Best Transportation-Inspired Art.
