By 2016, total transmission miles are projected to increase by less than 7 percent. NERC’s comments: “Transmission owners, planning authorities and other stakeholders need to engage in long-term, robust and comprehensive regional planning for transmission infrastructure, including infrastructure needed for new sources of generation.” Opportunity Pounds on the Door The future promises more than the need for expansion of electrical power infrastructure. Also consider that: ■ A national infrastructure for receiving liquid natural gas (LNG) imports is now in the planning and construction phase; ■ Separately, as many as 17 “mainline” natural gas pipeline projects are scheduled for 2007, according to the newsletter Inside F.E.R.C.; and ■ There were 59 ethanol plants under construction in the U.S. as of early November 2006, according to Biofuels Journal. Obviously, there are numerous potential solutions to meet U.S. energy needs and to increase our independence from foreign sources. No one knows which will succeed, what the “mix” of energy sources will be or how independent the U.S. will ultimately become.
