Moore Engineers & Consultants for innovation in structural engineering for the University of Phoenix Stadium (Cardinals Stadium) in Glendale, Ariz. The project was also honored in ACEC’s 2007 Engineering Excellence Awards competition. The new 63,400-seat, $455 million stadium features two of the largest moving parts in sports history: the country’s first completely retractable grass field and the first inclined retractable roof. The 2.2-acre field, which spends most of the year outdoors in a giant steel tray, can be wheeled in on tracks in just over an hour. And the two 550-ton retractable roof panels feed power back into the electrical grid as they slide open. Popular Science’s “ Best of What’s New” awards are presented to 100 breakthrough products and technologies that represent a significant leap forward. This award was presented in the Engineering category, one of 10 award groups. “These awards honor innovations that not only influence the way we live today, but change the way we think about the future,” said Mark Jannot, editor of Popular Science. Lang Associates’ offices in Wausau and Green Bay, Wis., will continue to do business, with their current staff and leadership, under the name Lang Associates, a Ken Nelson division of Clark Dietz. Randy Lang, president of Lang Associates, will remain with Clark Dietz as vice president, focusing on business development. Tim Falkowski and Dan Hanson will continue serving as vice presidents and office managers in Wausau and Green Bay, respectively. Tim Falkowski also will be appointed to the board of directors of Clark Dietz. “The acquisition of Lang Associates adds expanded depth and specialty services to Clark Dietz’s long-established MEP group,” said Ken Nelson, president of Clark Dietz.
