obvious genesis in the technical, political, and educational challenges posed by Napster and similar tools. Maturation. The final time period is characterized by (a) a steady increase in presentations addressing the general themes of “Security” and “User education” and (b) a large increase in the number of presentations about specialized topics of increasing specificity and complexity. Throughout the entire time period we examined, security and education were consistent themes. Every symposium had at least two presentations categorized as education, security, or both. However, both categories reached a crescendo in the last two years of program sessions analyzed in this research. In addition to the increase in security and education presentations, several categories emerged only in the last few years analyzed. These categories, with topics related to social networking, learning space design, and automating technology processes, indicate an increase in specialization and complexity in comparison to topics discussed during previous symposia. The 2002 presentation “So You’ve Got Site-Licensed Antivirus Software, Now What?” marked the first year that a presentation specifically addressed “Machine cleaning,” the practice of assisting residents in removing adware, viruses, and other undesirable or harmful software from their computers. In 2003, attendees of the presentation “Compromised Computers and Spyware Experiences” witnessed the first presentation addressing “Spyware” as a specific challenge to managing computers attached to the ResNet network. At the 2004 ResNet symposium, presentations with such titles as “Perfigo as an Authentication/Verification Mechanism”

from network installation challenges to management of the network and the information being exchanged on it. We speculate that the increasing popularity and use of the Internet and the World Wide Web caused this shift. In particular, the 1999 release of Napster by Northeastern University student Shawn Fanning (Menn, 2003) changed the management practices of computer networks on and off college and university campuses. Napster enabled students and others to easily share files, in particular songs and albums. While presentations such as “The Bandwidth Issue: Different Solutions to a Common Challenge” and “Establishing Fair Access Through Bandwidth Limits” discussed the new realities of network traffic management, others—such as “Copyright Issues & ResNet: Encouraging Responsibility,” “Fighting the Copyright War: News From the Trenches,” and “The Campus Napster Experience”—specifically focused on online copyright issues, ethics, and campus policies. Many of these challenges have an
