Supporting this conclusion is the significant overlap between these historically consistent presentation topics and the topics identified as current and future challenges by respondents to the 2005 ResNet Survey (ResNet Applied Research Group, 2005c). One-time themes. Several presentation categories appeared to be prominent for only 4-5 years (see Table 3). Many of them, particularly the minor categories, appear to be specific technologies or challenges that only emerged at a particular point in time but faded from prominence as they were “solved” or standardized. The two major categories identified as one-time themes, “Initial startup” and “Fall opening,” deserve particular mention. In 2000, pre-conference sessions were introduced at the ResNet Symposium specifically to discuss topics that were common to either new professionals or those starting new residential computer networks: topics such as initial startup of a residential computer network, fall opening, and support issues (D. Futey, personal communication, June 24, 2007). Thus there are at least two potential explanations for the virtual disap102
pearance of these topics after 2000 and 2001: (a) the issues were resolved or outlived or (b) the issues were still discussed, but discussion was shifted to the pre-conference sessions. We speculate that both explanations are correct. Reoccurring themes. We identified three minor categories as having been prominent topics at multiple points in time. Programs discussing Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (“DHCP”) focused on a specific and very common technology used to automatically configure the IP address and related information for computers connected to a network. Programs categorized as “Network authentication and registration” focused on identifying computers on the network and ensuring that they are authorized to connect to the network, a process analogous to controlling physical access to residence halls and rooms through the use of keys or ID cards. These two topics are closely tied together and were common presentation topics in the late 1990s but quickly disappeared as these network management techniques were introduced and implemented, often using institution-devel-
