ThE cuRRENT STuDy examines how a similiarity in interpersonal needs relates to roommate satisfaction. The level of roommate satisfaction and the interpersonal needs of inclusion, openness, and control were measured for 102 residential roommates. Of the three interpersonal needs measured, only control was significantly related to satisfaction, and satisfaction was greatest when both roommates scored low on their need to control. Results are discussed in terms of best practices for roommate matching.

INTRODUCTION
The student roommate relationship is an important interpersonal relationship for college and university freshmen (Lovejoy, Perkins, & Collins, 1995). Satisfaction in the relationship between roommates is a concern for administrators because it can affect a student’s academic and social life (Ross, Niebling, & Heckert, 1999), which can further affect retention rates (Coffman & Gilligan, 2002). The literature in interpersonal communication has established a clear link between similarity in a variety of interpersonal needs and the formation and maintenance of satisfying relationships (Anderson, Keltner, & John, in press). Therefore, it is useful to examine the similarity of roommates’ interpersonal needs and how they relate to satisfaction with each other.

INTERPERSONAL NEEDS AND COMMUNICATION
Humans have a basic set of needs (Maslow, 1943), among which are the interpersonal needs of inclusion, openness, and control (Schutz, 1958). The need for inclusion reflects a person’s desire to be included in social groups, the need for openness reflects a person’s desire to experience warm and caring relationships, and the need for control reflects an individual’s desire for power and influence (Schutz, 1992). The importance of these needs varies widely by individual, and Schutz argues that one’s desire to fulfill these needs directs behaviors and in turn communication. Interpersonal communication helps us fulfill interpersonal needs by enacting
