independent measures, with satisfaction as the dependent measure. Of the three interpersonal needs, only control was significantly related to satisfaction (F(2,99) = 5.96, p < .05). Satisfaction was greatest when both roommates scored low on control (M = 9.3) versus when both roommates scored high on control (M = 7.9).
DISCUSSION
Partial support was found for the prediction that similarity of interpersonal needs would relate to satisfaction in roommate relationships. Roommates who both scored low on their need for control were more satisfied with their roommate than were those who both scored high in terms of control or those who scored differently. Therefore, similarity in control needs was only positively related to satisfaction with roommates who had low control needs. In other words, if I scored very high on the need for control and I had a roommate who also scored very high on this item, I was less satisfied with my roommate. In the current study, roommates’ satisfaction was not affected by their lack of similarity in terms of inclusion or openness. These findings suggest that roommates are much more tolerant of differences in the need for spending time to-
gether or for depth of self-disclosures than they are for the need to be in charge or be a leader. A similar pattern was seen in the data from Martin & Anderson (1995) in terms of verbal aggressiveness. Similarity was only a significant predictor of satisfaction when both roommates scored low on this item. There may be a relationship between high control needs and high verbal aggressiveness that future research could explore. There were no gender differences regarding control and satisfaction, unlike previous research indicating that similarity on other scales, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), were only predictive of roommate satisfaction among women (Carey et al., 1986). This lack of gender differences is encouraging. Certainly, a screening measure that is a significant predictor of roommate satisfaction for both men and women would be more useful, and the results from the current study suggest that the interpersonal need for control is not gender-specific. Because successful roommate pairing is highly desirable (Lovejoy et al., 1995), information about the relationship between interpersonal needs and roommate satisfaction could be useful to college and university adV o l u m e 3 6 , No. 2 • 2 0 1 0
