Roommate Satisfaction

Discussion Questions
1. The article examines roommate pairing as an intentional (and positive) means of establishing living arrangements. What are the pros and cons of intentional roommate pairing based on specific criteria compared to random placement of roommates? 2. Conflict resolution is a skill that is vital to the success of an adult in society. Real world situations often involve conflicting views and opinions. Is intentional roommate pairing counterproductive to helping students learn from challenging experiences, to deal with emotions, and to work with others to arrive at win-win solutions? What other strategies might be used to teach students conflict resolution skills? 3. According to the article, personality traits and communication strategies are indicative of personal needs. Considering your own perceived personality traits and interpersonal needs, what skills have you developed to form relationships with those whose needs differ from your own? 4. Given that the highest roommate satisfaction was found when both roommates expressed low need for control, what might residence hall staff do to facilitate high roommate satisfaction when one or both roommates express a high need for control? 5. Survey participants were asked to rate their satisfaction with their roommates on a scale of 1 to 10. Discuss the pros and cons of using this approach to measuring the level of roommate satisfaction.
