A Design for an Intentional Democratic Community
In an era of planning communities and increasingly complex social and political systems the need is more urgent than ever for education to produce citizens who not only comprehend the processes of democracy, but also are capable of functioning effectively within it .
Resolution
It is during the resolution stage that the hard work of achieving the new community as reviewed and revised during the transference stage takes place. It is time for transcendence, for fulfillment of the social contract. It is time for putting the ideas of democracy and community to the final tests in the design.
Renewal
In this final stage the community is brought to an end, perhaps to renew itself in a new community the following year with a cast of old and new characters, or perhaps, by use of the knowledge and skills gained the members themselves may find renewal in another human setting. In either case, hopefully the experience will be evaluated and synthesized in the life patterns of those who participated.
Transference
This is probably the most critical stage. A prearranged time is set for a renegotiation of the social contract and a possible reorganization of governance and a shift in the power structure. For IDC’s with charter groups that do not comprise the total membership this gives the recruited members who did not participate in the initial decisions to form the IDC the opportunity to affirm the plan or propose alternatives. For charter members it is the end of the provisional or probationary period, a time to take stock, to analyze and interpret the data that has been regularly collected, and propose any changes or alterations in goals, methods, and leadership. Once this process is completed it is time for affirmation, for commitment, for the sense of community to become a shared force. If the inclusion stage begins with the opening of the fall term, transference could take place as early as November or early December.
CONCLUDING COMMENT
In an era of planned communities and increasingly complex social and political systems the need is more urgent than ever for education to produce citizens who not only comprehend the processes of democracy, but also are capable of functioning effectively within it. The intentional democratic community shows promise as an opportunity for such learning to occur in depth. More data are needed to test the viability of the IDC paradigm described in this chapter. Hopefully, present and proposed experimentation on a variety of college campuses will lead to further refinement or modification.
