By calling the nation to hard work, creativity, and an enhanced awareness of our collective responsibilities, President Obama has asked us to shift our ways of thinking about the relationship between individuals and their communities .
AMERIcAN SOcIETy TENDS TO SwING between periods of focus on individual welfare and periods of focus on the welfare of the whole (Bellah, Madsen, Sullivan, Swidler, & Tipton, 1985). Since his inauguration, president Barack Obama has repeatedly asked the nation to rise above this dichotomy. he calls for integrating our emphasis on individual responsibility and hard work with a focus on long-term national welfare. By calling the nation to hard work, creativity, and an enhanced awareness of our collective responsibilities, president Obama has asked us to shift our ways of thinking about the relationship between individuals and their communities. he has reminded us that communities are very important for human welfare, that citizens should be actively involved in their own communities, that we must develop more sustainable ways of life, and that we should consider issues of justice and fairness when we make economic decisions. Obama embodies the leadership style that Strauss and howe (1997) refer to as “the fourth turning,” a moment in history that demands “both personal sacrifice and public authority” (p. 312), clearing away the institutional mistakes of the past and “reinvent(ing) good citizenship at the local level. communities should improve their own functions (schools, housing, transportation, safety, justice, social services) with their own resources” (p. 314).
