Letter from the Editor
Greetings good colleagues and friends in ACUHO-I! William Drayton, founder and CEO of Ashoka, an association of social entrepreneurs working to resolve some of the world’s social problems, said that change starts when someone sees the next step. This issue of The Journal of College and University Student Housing is the product of many people’s vision of what that “next step” could and should be for our Journal. This first-ever double issue combines the best research that has been submitted for peer review as well as invited research on the special topic issue of “Housing on Urban Campuses” guest edited by Bonita Butner and Eric Grospitch, both of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Certainly this is a major change for our Journal to go from two issues a year to one “super issue,” but one we feel was appropriate given that costs have increased dramatically in both printing and mailing the Journal. But more than for budget considerations alone, we have made several other “next step” changes that we believe will provide added value to our readers. First, along with this printed copy, the Journal will also be available electronically, which should increase the reach and use of the publication. The online version of the Journal is available at the ACUHO-I Web site at www.acuho-i.org. The electronic version can be more easily forwarded to staff or students than can a paper copy. Second, each article within the double issue includes discussion questions that will allow practitioners and faculty to use the research for professional development in an office setting or learning activities within the classroom. Thanks go to Pam Schreiber, housing director at the University of Washington, and Daisy Waryold, an assistant professor at Appalachian State University, for their thoughtful development of these questions. Teaming a practitioner and faculty member to develop these study guides assures that discussion about these articles can be focused on areas appropriate to both in-class and out-of-class learning experiences.
