NOW WHAT?
The IDC model grew out of Crookston’s perception that simply being born in the U.S. did not necessarily teach people the skills they needed to help the nation thrive as a democracy. He drew his conclusions from the social chaos of the 1960s. We are in a different period of chaos now, but the skills required to reinvigorate our democracy are similar. A higher percentage of our population is attending college now than in the 1960s. Our country is more diverse, more fragmented, and less likely to be concerned with the general welfare. Residential learning communities are positioned to make an outstanding contribution to the learning processes of our students and their ability to function as citizens of our democracy. Some experimentation is once again in order.
