Intentional Democratic Communities

Discussion Questions
1. The author speaks to the paradox of American democracy in which Americans are forced to respond to authoritarian and bureaucratic structures at the expense of learning and experiencing the ideals of democratic communities. How are institutions of higher learning places where democratic ideals are practiced? Are housing/residence life offices advocating for democratic communities in both words and actions? 2. The author references the effects of a 24/7 wired world as impediments to effective face-to-face communication practices. How might this impact the creation of community in the residence halls and on campus? 3. Ernest Boyer is best known for his six principles of community (purposeful, open, just, disciplined, caring, celebrative). Compare these to the 10 elements of an intentional democratic community presented by Crookston. 4. The author suggests that the need for intentional democratic communities to prepare young adults to actively participate in a democratic society remains critical and that the IDC is a viable model for living-learning communities within campus residential programs. Review and discuss her arguments for why this is the case. Do you agree? Why or why not? 5. Crookston identifies seven stages of development for an intentional democratic community (nuclear, charter, inclusion, integration, transference, resolution, and renewal). How might this model be useful in developing and evaluating the success of other types of living-learning communities?
