Our regular issue contains seven interesting and useful articles; the first three will be of interest to residential life staff, as they relate to students who live in our on-campus housing. Karen Erlandson examines qualities that contribute to roommate compatibility in her research study “Similarity of Interpersonal Needs and Roommate Satisfaction.” She focuses on the interpersonal characteristics of inclusion, openness, and control and compares them with satisfaction in roommate relationships. Perceptions of both LGBT and non-LGBT students about the negative attitudes toward LGBT students in residence halls is the focus of an article by Michael Fanucce and Deborah Taub. Their research, “The Relationship of Homonegativity to LGBT Students’ and Non-LGBT Students’ Perceptions of Residence Hall Climate” assesses community and climate issues such as support, cohesion, conflict, and safety for LGBT students in campus residence halls. Learning communities are the focus of the next two articles in this issue. The historical update article features Burns Crookston’s work “A Design for an Intentional Democratic Community,” published in 1974 (in Mable & DeCoster’s Student Development and Education in College Residence Halls). Jane Fried discusses what Crookston’s plan for an Intentional Democratic Community might look like if implemented today in her article “Intentional Democratic Communities: Residential Education for Civic Engagement.” Although Crookston never published his research in The Journal of College and University Student Housing, the 40th anniversary of the first Intentional Democratic Community, which was celebrated this summer with a reunion of some of the original residents, was important enough for us to include his article in this issue. Results of a study on computer science and engineering student relationships with faculty and peers are discussed in “Exploring the Effects of a Residential Academic Affairs-Student Affairs Partnership: The First Year of an
