rather than facilities with a combination of unit types. Fifteen projects incorporated more than one style of bed/unit, and there were slightly more multi-style projects incorporating suites and apartments than traditional-style rooms. New construction projects were intended mainly for single undergraduate students. Specifically, institutions noted that 19.7% of all new projects were constructed to serve upper division undergraduates, 54.1% to serve non-freshman undergraduates, and 34.4% to serve freshmen. Compared to earlier surveys, there was a greater focus on freshmen and less focus on upper division students. This may explain the trend toward more double-occupancy rooms. The newly constructed buildings intended to serve upper division undergraduates (juniors and seniors) included mainly super suites (26.7%) and individual contract apartments (26.7%). Projects built to serve non-freshman undergraduates (sophomores, juniors, and
seniors) consisted mainly of super suites (31.3%), modified traditional rooms (18.8%), semi-suites (18.8%), and individual contract apartments (18.8%). Finally, halls designed for freshmen consisted mainly of semi-suites (25.9%) and modified traditional rooms (25.9%).
Renovation Projects
Several types of renovation projects were included in the survey, from cosmetic improvements (e.g., paint and new furnishings) to total rehabilitation (e.g., gutting the facility and incorporating all new materials and systems). Respondents had the option to report renovation projects under $100,000. CHOs from 78 institutions reported 168 renovation projects. Of these projects, the most common was system refurbishment (32.7%), followed by modified rehabilitation (19.8%), cosmetic refurbishment (19.8%), rehabilitation (16.7%), and general refurbishment (11.1%). Definitions of these specific types of renovations are provided in Table 3.
