student retention? How does a private urban institution that houses 95% of its freshman students work with academic affairs to impact retention? How can you eliminate confusion when working across institutional lines? Shawn Brooks provides a context for the reader by offering a brief overview of the city of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh. He then provides convincing statistics that demonstrate the impact of the combined efforts of academic and student affairs on student retention, highlighting the need to consider the whole student when addressing issues of retention.

The authors of this special issue are practicing professionals who have invaluable lived experience working on urban campuses. They bring a unique perspective to this emerging area of research and provide a foundation for future study. As more urban institutions expand their housing options, we have an opportunity to deepen our understanding of how the urban environment impacts campus housing and, ultimately, our students. We hope that this special issue will generate conversations among urban and non-urban professionals as we all work to promote student growth and development.
