Mark A. Nordenberg, Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh, is fond of saying that the city of Pittsburgh is our campus. Like any good neighbor, we seek ways to give back to our community. The residence halls have been a major player in the recruitment and retention of students. From traditional programs such as orientation, pre-arrival telephone calls, and freshman t-shirts to the more urbanfocused concentration on community involvement, the residence halls at the University of Pittsburgh have been a coordinating force for an increased level of student retention and student awareness. As indicated previously, this is the second year for many of our initiatives. We will continue to collect data that will provide insight into the strategies that work, and we anticipate continued success in the retention of students and the centrality of campus housing to that success.
