Discussion Questions
1. The author suggests developing and maintaining a positive relationship with the institution’s surrounding community regardless of any plans for expansion. Other than monthly forums as suggested in the article, what other strategies for developing this relationship might be employed? What role do students play in this relationship, and how might they be involved? 2. What are some measures of the economic impact of a college or university on the surrounding community? Whose responsibility should it be to assess and/or promote this impact? 3. Effectively articulating the value of student residential communities is important for every housing operation, but it may be more challenging to convince community members not otherwise involved with higher education. What strategies would you use to communicate why your institution values this experience for students to the extent that it justifies expansion beyond the traditional campus borders? 4. What are some creative strategies for addressing the typical concerns expressed by community members such as those revealed in this study (parking, noise, safety, decreased property values, loss of community amenities/benefits, loss of neighborhood “feel”)? 5. The author raises an ethical dilemma pertaining to urban colleges and universities that need to acquire new properties in the community in order to expand housing options for students: the expansion may require razing buildings on community properties. Discuss this dilemma. 6. What are the unique needs of your own campus with regard to growth? How can or does your institution manage student housing needs in a manner that respects the surrounding community? 7. How does one balance the need to deliver what is attractive to potential student occupants and the need for residential expansion with the needs of the greater local community?
