Learning community programs can create a seamless learning environment and can engage students in their own learning while bridging the academic and social experiences of students. Student learning is a continuous process that occurs both inside and outside the classroom. Living in a residence hall provides students with opportunities not always available to those living off campus. Living on campus can impact a student’s cognitive (Pascarella et al., 1992), social, emotional, physical, and spiritual beliefs and can play a role in a student’s overall development. Collaborations between student affairs and academic affairs can provide integrated learning opportunities for students. Collaborations “combine knowledge acquisition and experiential learning to promote more complex outcomes” (American College Personnel Association [ACPA] & National Association of Student Personnel Administrators [NASPA], 2004, p. 20). In Learning Reconsidered, learning is defined as “a comprehensive, holistic, transformative activity that includes learning and student development” (ACPA & NASPA, p. 4). The concepts of academic learning and student development can no longer be considered independent of one another. Learning now requires “consideration of what students know, who they are, what their values and behavior patterns are, and how they see themselves contributing to and participating in the world in which they live” (ACPA & NASPA, p. 10). Pascarella, Terenzini, and Blimling (as cited in Schroeder & Mable, 1994) state that residen12
