Type 2: Claustrophobic
entering college and living in a residence hall provokes enough anxiety for most freshmen. leaving the comfort and safety of his family home and entering a campus community filled with women and men of diverse backgrounds can be difficult for the claustrophobic man, who may experience various uncomfortable feelings, including claustrophobia. He may feel like others are trying to impose their will over him to change his traditional worldview and embrace diversity. the claustrophobic man may view women and dissimilar men in very traditional and overgeneralized ways, and the sense of competition may cause him to try to oppress others for his own gain. the claustrophobic period can be a very challenging time both for him and for the people around him. Without experiencing true dissonance in his thinking and worldview, he may never exhibit any attitudes other than those in type 1 or type 2 and may go on oppressing others as he struggles to obtain power and privilege.

able to realize his role in the pervasive competition for power and privilege. He is able to understand that women and dissimilar men are often oppressed and that this oppression gives men an advantage in the residence halls and on campus. there is now an awareness of how being a man has provided him with these unearned privileges.

Type 5: Optimal
the Optimal man seeks to improve his relationships with women and dissimilar men, for “this person has changed his worldview into a holistic understanding of the common struggle of all people for survival” (scott & robinson, 2001, p. 420). there is increased knowledge about his own gender and about the role his gender has played in his interactions with others. unearned privilege and power over others is now seen as detrimental to the person’s potential for success. this man now understands that collaborations with women and dissimilar men are crucial and constitute the real keys to survival and success. success has now moved from being externally driven to being internally driven and congruent with societal values.

Type 3: Conscious Identity
a man moves to possessing conscious identity attitudes when a precipitating event in his life creates a dissonance in his belief system concerning women or dissimilar men. an example of dissonance could be taking a class from a dynamic female professor, studying with a smart and helpful dissimilar man, or growing close to a dissimilar man in the residential community. this dissonance leads him to begin examining his worldview and how he affects others around him.

IMPLICATIONS FOR HOUSING PROFESSIONALS
a young man entering into campus residence halls and exhibiting type 1 (non-contact) attitudes can be very challenging for housing professionals, especially for a first-year ra. it will be critical for housing professionals to recognize this man early on and begin a supportive and open dialogue about gender and his role in interactions with others. if the housing professional tries to move too fast with confrontation and wanting to change the man’s attitudes

Type 4: Empirical
as a result of experiencing a dissonance in his worldview, the empirical man is now finally
