1. The authors quote Harper and Quaye, who assert that "dependency on sameness is no longer
appropriate." As our college students are becoming more and more diverse, what are some
best practices you can utilize that honor difference instead of a dependency on sameness?
2. In 1991, Kirkness and Barnhardt stated that university policies "do not yet provide a
hospitable environment" for Indigenous students. What advances have we made over the
last two decades to help provide a more welcoming environment for Indigenous students?
In what ways are we still failing to do so?
3. The authors focused on the importance of place-based learning/knowing for many Native
students but highlighted that many NNCUs are unaware of place-based knowing. How
can your department increase full-time, paraprofessional, and student staff members'
knowledge and understanding of the importance of place-based knowing in order to better
support Native students?
4. "Indigenous history is American history, and Indigenous history is part of an institution's
history." Identify ways that a department and institution can be intentional about including
Indigenous history while sharing the institution's history.
5. The importance of partnering with Indigenous students and organizations to facilitate
changes is mentioned numerous times throughout the article. Identify some local and
national groups or organizations that your department could collaborate with to make a
more inclusive environment for Indigenous students.
6. Carousel interviewing is a common practice that can unknowingly place Native students at a
disadvantage. What are some alternative hiring practices that departments can use to make the
recruitment and selection process better able to value Indigenous ways of knowing and being?
7. SDSU's smudging policy portrays a great example of departments working to maintain safety,
while being accommodating and respectful of Native-centered ways. How can departments
work to identify and create other housing policies that can better support Native students?
8. What are some areas for future research on this topic?
